It takes a special type to save a life

Meeting the needs of patients in our community is the goal of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC). To accomplish this, STBTC works to collect the most effective blood component, based on donor blood type and current patient need. The need for red blood cells, platelets and plasma is monitored daily, which helps us determine the preferred products to collect on a given day.

STBTC seeks to manage its entire inventory by collecting the right amount, in the right type at the right time. This will maximize each donation and help keep down health care costs.

What does this mean to you as a donor?

1. You may be asked to change your whole blood donation to a platelet or plasma donation, because currently patients have a greater need for these components. To learn more about the different blood components and ways to donate, visit our website: southtexasblood.org.

2. You may be asked to postpone your donation until another time, because our forecast indicates that your donation will be needed during a more critical time.

3.  By making an appointment to donate, you can be sure that your generous donation is the one most needed by hospital patients. Please call 210.731.5590 to make your appointment before your next visit.

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center staff appreciates every blood donor who comes through our doors. Thank you for helping us be good stewards of this precious community resource.
