5 reasons to become a blood donor in January
January is National Blood Donor Month, and to ensure a stable blood supply in the community, blood donors are needed.
Here are five reasons why you should volunteer one to two hours of your time so that lifesaving blood is readily available for patients and hospitals in South Texas.
1. Blood levels dangerously low to start 2019
Blood donations decline over the holiday break and, this year, a number of groups have canceled January drives that would have helped replenish blood supplies.
2. Patient and hospital needs increase in January
The first weeks in January typically have the highest volume of blood use of the year as medical procedures that were put on hold during the holidays are scheduled.
3. Making a difference for patients with blood cancers
Donating blood helps patients like 2-year-old Bella and 9-year-old Lane with their treatments against leukemia and aplastic anemia.
4. Cool offers for donating
The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is thanking donors this month with a $10 H-E-B gift card. Donors giving platelets or type-O blood will receive a $20 H-E-B gift card. The Big Lou’s drive on Jan. 19 will have a free 20-inch pizza, a T-shirt, and tickets to City Base Cinema. Past incentives were $10 gift cards for Topgolf and Andretti Indoor Karting.
5. January is National Blood Donor Month
National Blood Donor Month serves as an encouraging reminder to roll up your sleeve to help those in need as we begin the new year.
