Community encouraged to support first grader
South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, a subsidiary of BioBridge Global, will be hosting a blood drive in honor of a young San Antonio patient diagnosed with childhood leukemia. Family and friends of seven-year-old Dev, who has used over 330 blood products since being diagnosed in July, 2017, will host a two-day blood drive in Dev’s honor.
For the past several months, and fighting for his life, Dev has been in and out of the hospital as he receives treatment for his illness including chemotherapy and blood transfusions.
To make things more challenging, Dev is, unfortunately, O negative. O negative patients can only receive blood from an O negative donor - who make up only seven percent of the population.
“The truly first lifesaving intervention that occurred in his journey was from blood donors who allowed him to start with a leg up so he could receive his chemo,” said Ami, Dev’s mother. Without these initial transfusions, Dev’s treatment would not have been possible.”
Through Dev’s journey, he has received an enormous amount of support from family, friends and the community. “He is in good hands, we truly feel blessed because he is in a community of family, friends and physicians and staff who are rooting for him to get better,” said Ami.
To continue the support for Dev, friends and family are encouraging others to come out, donate blood and support the first grader so he is not in the fight alone:
Wednesday, Feb. 14 or Thursday, Feb. 15
8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
South Texas Blood & Tissue Center Donor Pavilion – 6211 IH 10 West
“Ultimately none of this would have been possible if not for generous unselfish blood donors who are willing to give a piece of their body to give life to others,” said Ami.
As a thank you all presenting donors will receive a T-shirt that entitles them to a free slice of pie with the purchase of a combo meal at any Bill Miller.
Community members wishing to help Dev can visit any one of seven donor rooms in San Antonio or New Braunfels. To schedule a donation, please call 210-731-5590 or visit SouthTexasBlood.org/teamdev
