Family’s loss of child inspires them to help others

Community comes together in honor of toddler who fought blood disorder
April 13, 2018

GenCure and South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC), both subsidiaries of BioBridge Global, will host a marrow registry event and a blood drive Friday, April 13 – Sunday April 15 at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center Donor Pavilion to replenish blood that helped Jason Luke battle his blood disorder for 10 months.

The toddler was diagnosed with severe congenital neutropenia, a white blood cell disorder in June of 2016. The selflessness of blood and platelet donors helped the two-year-old fight during his battle.

Jason underwent six surgeries, was rushed to the emergency room three times, needed hundreds of blood transfusions and received a marrow transplant.

At times the toddler, who enjoyed the outdoors and toys that made crunchy noises, had a continued platelet drip to stop his bleeding gums and help his blood clot.

“My family and I are so grateful for all the selfless blood donors, doctors and nurses.  We were very fortunate that there was always enough blood products when we needed them,” said Maurisa Carlin, Jason’s mother. “We want to replenish the blood in his memory because other children and adults continue to need blood and platelets.”

As Jason’s second birthday approached, Maurisa turned to GenCure and STBTC to host a marrow registry event and blood drive to help the many children who are still in need of a transplant and blood transfusions.

“His strength, his bravery and his courage really impacted so many people and as a mother you’re like, wow!,” said Maurisa. “We will be forever grateful for the selfless blood donors and his perfect match unrelated marrow donor who helped Jason on his earthly journey.”

Maurisa along with her family and friends invite the community to not only donate blood, but also register to be a marrow donor. The marrow and registration drives are scheduled for:
