Myths and facts about giving blood ‘one more time’
Here are some myths and realities about the number of times you can give blood every year:
Reality: You actually can make a whole-blood donation every eight weeks and/or donate platelets up to 24 times a year.
Reality: In 2018, the number of donors in South Texas was at its second-lowest level in 10 years, but the need for donations went up along with population growth.
Reality: The largest percentage of donors in 2018 – 68% -- gave just one time, and we experienced the typical seasonal shortages during the holidays and the summer break when students are out of school.
Reality: In 2018, if just half the one-time donors had given once more, collections would have been close to 130,000 units – more than enough to meet local demand. If every donor had given one more time, the total would have been more than 170,000, the most in the last 10 years.
The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center would like to see you more often. Learn more about the donation process at the STBTC Donor FAQ page and find a location that fits your schedule at the STBTC Donating for Life page.
