National fundraising run/walk for blood research comes to San Antonio
The community is invited to support innovative medical research during the AABB’s National Blood Foundation (NBF) Run for Research. South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) and its nonprofit parent, BioBridge Global, are official community partners of the event.
The 5K run/1-mile walk, which is also sponsored by the Armed Services Blood Program, is scheduled for 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, starting at Sunset Station, 1174 E. Commerce St.
The race is part of a series of NBF fundraisers for blood and cell therapy research. The event takes place during the 2019 AABB Annual Meeting in San Antonio.
“The National Blood Foundation Run for Research is an incredible way to raise money for research, and we’re thrilled to be a partner in this event,” said Dr. Samantha Gomez Ngamsuntikul, Associate Medical Director for STBTC.
Registration for the run ends Friday, Oct. 18, 2019 and cost is $55. Packet pickup will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
After the race, runners will be treated to a complimentary breakfast at the Grand Hyatt from 8-9:30 a.m. Additional details about the run and event registration are available on the NBF website.
“The new Community Partnership program has allowed AABB to work together with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, an AABB-accredited blood donor center, to support novel research that could improve the health and safety of patients and donors in San Antonio and throughout the world,” says Julia Zimmerman, AABB Vice President of Engagement.
Established in 1983, AABB’s National Blood Foundation serves the fields of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies through grant making, educational offerings and industry leadership engagement and recognition. Since 1985, the NBF has awarded over $10 million in grants to more than 200 early-career researchers through its Scientific Research Grants Program. This year alone, NBF supporters funded grants for six early-career researchers to help continue their exploration of cutting-edge topics to advance transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.
