STBTC offering $10 H-E-B gift cards to blood donors in May
Donors who give blood or platelets in the month of May will receive H-E-B gift cards from the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC), a subsidiary of BioBridge Global, as a thank-you gift for helping the center prepare for blood shortages in summer, when high schools are out for break and donations decrease by 20 percent.
Donors who give blood in May will receive a $10 H-E-B gift card. Because of critical shortages of type-O blood and platelets, these donors will receive a $20 H-E-B gift card.
The reason donors who give platelets and type-O blood are so vital is O blood is most often used by hospitals for emergency surgeries. Platelets only have a shelf life of five days and are used to help treat cancer patients as well as aid trauma patients to stop bleeding.
“May is a critical month for us to prepare for the expected summer shortages,” said Dr. Samantha Gomez Ngamsuntikul, STBTC associate medical director. “This month is also Trauma Awareness Month, and we want to thank all of our generous donors for providing lifesaving blood to patients in need.”
For more information about the blood donation process or to schedule a donation, donors are encouraged to call 210-731-5590. STBTC operates seven donor rooms throughout San Antonio, New Braunfels and Victoria.
Anyone wishing to donate blood must present identification. Donors under the age of 16 must have a signed parental consent form and weigh at least 120 pounds. Anyone over the age of 17 may donate and must be in general good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. All donors are encouraged to eat well and adequately hydrate before and after donation. Refreshments and snacks are provided to donors. In addition, all donors receive a wellness check. Learn more about blood donation at SouthTexasBlood.org.
