How can you help victims affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma? Donate!
The response to our plea for donors has been absolutely amazing. Our community's commitment to helping each other has enabled the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center to send almost 3,000 units of blood and platelets to areas affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma. This is in addition to the 750 units sent to local hospitals treating patients evacuated from coastal areas prior to Harvey and the almost 500 units we send to South Texas hospitals daily. Not an easy task for any blood bank - especially at a time of year when most experience blood shortages.
How can you help now?
But the need continues. Hospitals are now requesting more support as patients in areas affected by the storms continue to rebuild their lives. The most urgent need is for platelet donations. We encourage all donors to consider making an appointment at any of our donor rooms or mobile platelet drives now through October.
